A box he was told never to open

Milo never met his grandfather — only a name, a few photographs, and a sealed box handed down with one rule: nobody opens it. Eleven and unwatched, he opened it anyway. Under the ordinary keepsakes was an object that shouldn't be warm. He didn't decide to keep it; it just ended up an inch from his pillow.

That night, he didn't dream. He fell past dreaming altogether — down into the Undermind, the shared floor beneath every sleeping mind, where something has been running all along.

A machine no one can explain

It draws a slow current up out of the dark and works it, tirelessly, into the shapes it sends against him. Old, patient, entirely unbothered — where it came from, what it wants, how long it has been down there, no one knows. It has never once had to answer to anyone else being here. It hasn't noticed Milo yet.

He wasn't the first one down

A path worn into flawless machinery says someone stood here before him — and somehow he knows it was the grandfather he never met. In the waking world he finds the proof: a hidden workbench, an old radio still tuned to something, a logbook decades deep. The man who “did some work” in his sleep had spent a lifetime learning the one thing the Machine never could.

Getting stronger arms them, too

Break one of the Machine's shapes and it loses nothing — what falls settles into a raw residue it draws back up and works into the next one, sturdier, unless Milo catches that residue first and refines it into power of his own. Every step he climbs, the Machine climbs too. The only question is who keeps the current — and that choice is the whole game.

“I'm not sorry I found it. I'm only sorry I never made it safe enough to hand to anyone I loved.”
— the last page of his grandfather's logbook

You take his place. Every night, you go under.

The Practice

Continue his work.

Nightfall: Dream Machine is a minimalist idle action game. Drop into the Undermind, hold your ground against what the Machine sends, and refine what it leaves behind — the practice a man spent his whole life keeping in secret.

Real-time dream combat

Endless waves of Siphons, auto-fought in a lucid arena, with a greater Siphon every fifth wave.

Refine the current

Catch the Dust of everything you break and refine it into Current, across seven elements, each climbing toward greater power.

Research the designs

Study the Blueprints the Machine never had, focus your Dream Forms into the fight, and keep them alive on a constant flow of Current.

Your progress arms both sides

Every scrap of power you don't claim, the Machine takes — and sends back stronger. Outbuild it, or arm it.

Three pillars of power

Shape your Dreamer around Attack, Defense, or Harvesting, and grow both the night you're in and every night after.

Idle that respects your time

Refining and research advance while you're away, so every return starts stronger.

The Current

Seven elements of the dream

Water, fire, earth and air flow from the first night. Shadow, arcane and void reveal themselves deeper in the dark.

Down, and back up, and down again

Go under

Drop into the lucid arena and stand against endless waves of Siphons in real time, growing stronger with every kill as the night escalates.

Wake and carry

When the night ends, you wake — and keep a little of what you earned, carried into power that lasts across every night that follows.

Refine and research

Refine what you gathered and research the designs the Machine never learned — work that keeps advancing even while you sleep.

The Nights Unspent

The story is still going down

Much of it is built and playable today. The rest is still going down — the nights this story has yet to spend.

Now

The dream is real

The Undermind, the Refinery, and the long climb through the night are built and playable.

Next

Deeper into the dark

More Dream Forms, more elements, and more of what the Undermind — and the Machine that runs it — is still hiding.

Then

The last of it

The final art and sound, and the balance that makes every night worth returning to.

Launch

The night opens

Nightfall arrives on iOS and Android, with the way in appearing right here.
